he life and times of Dewang Mehta were as dream-like as the movies he so loved to
watch, and might even have made one day. His was a unique story-line that traversed a
landscape of twists and turns
—
the sort of saga that keeps audiences riveted. He crafted
his own script, occupied the director’s chair, and played the central part until the very end,
when his untimely rendezvous with destiny brought the curtain down abruptly.
The Early years
August 10, 1962 is the day Dewang Mehta drew his first breath, in a sleepy hamlet called
Umreth, in the interiors of Gujarat, India.The first six years of his life that were spent in
the idyllic rural surroundings, fostered within him a love for the soil. He was drawn to
Umreth time and time again, creating opportunities to visit the land of his forefathers.
The decision of his parents to move to Delhi in Mehta’s sixth year brought him into the
heart of metro action. His quest for knowledge and an education began at the Bharatiya
Vidya Bhavan, a down-to-earth school in the capital city. By the time he was ready to
wrap up his formative, school learning phase in 1979, he had already been smitten by the
